The conventional surveillance methods used in ITS to detect real-time traffic data, e.g. video image processing and inductive loops detection, have several shortcomings, such as limited coverage and high costs of implementation and maintenance. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) offer the potential of providng real-time traffic data without these drawbacks. Hence, in the past decade, WSNs have been applied to ITS to improve the performance of ITS. Controlling traffic lights plays a key role in ITS. We investigate how to design methods and algorithms for adaptive traffic light control in a WSN-based ITS. We propose models and schemes for adaptive traffic light control for both isolated intersections and multiple intersections. The proposed approaches take advantage of real-time traffic information collected by WSNs to achieve high system throughput, low waiting time and few stops for the vehicles. We have implemented the proposed schemes on our testbed for Intelligent Services with WSNs, iSensNet to evaluate and demonstrate the performance. Our experimental results show that our approaches can deal with different traffic conditions in an effective manner.

In view of the incessant growth of data and knowledge and the continued diversifi- tion of information dissemination on a global scale, scalability has become a ma- stream research area in computer science and information systems. The ICST INFO- SCALE conference is one of the premier forums for presenting new and exciting research related to all aspects of scalability, including system architecture, resource management, data management, networking, and performance. As the fourth conf- ence in the series, INFOSCALE 2009 was held in Hong Kong on June 10 and 11, 2009. The articles presented in this volume focus on a wide range of scalability issues and new approaches to tackle problems arising from the ever-growing size and c- plexity of information of all kind. Parallel computing has become a mainstream research area in computer science and the ISPA conference has become one of the premier forums for the presentation of new and exciting research on all aspects of parallel computing. We are pleased to present the proceedings for the 3rd International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing and Applications (ISPA 2005), which comprises a collection of excellent technical papers, and keynote speeches. The papers accepted cover a wide range of exciting topics, including architectures, software, networking, and applications. The conference continues to grow and this year a record total of 968 manuscripts (including workshop submissions) were submitted for consideration by the Program Committee or workshops. From the 645 papers submitted to the main conference, the Program Committee selected only 90 long papers and 19 short papers in the program. Eight workshops complemented the outstanding paper sessions.

Welcome to the proceedings of APPT 2005: the 6th International Workshop on Advanced Parallel Processing Technologies. APPT is a biennial workshop on parallel and distributed processing. Its scope covers all aspects of parallel and distributed computing technologies, including architectures, software systems and tools, algorithms, and applications. APPT originated from collaborations by researchers from China and Germany and has evolved to be an international workshop. APPT 2005 was the sixth in the series. The past ?ve workshops were held in Beijing, Koblenz, Changsha, Ilmenau, and Xiamen, respectively. The Program Committee is pleased to present the proceedings for APPT 2005. This year, APPT 2005 received over 220 submissions from researchers all over the world. All the papers were peer reviewed by two to three Program Committee members on their relevance, originality, signi?cance, technical qu- ity, and presentation. Based on the review result, 55 high-quality papers were selected to be included in the proceedings. The papers in this volume represent the forefront of research on parallel processing and related ?elds by researchers from China, Germany, USA, Korea, India, and other countries. With the advance of computer networks and hardware technology, parallel and distributed processing has become a key technology which plays an imp- tant part in determining future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches. It provides a means to solve computati- ally intensive problems by improving processing speed. It is also the only - ableapproachtobuildinghighlyreliableandinherentlydistributedapplications. ISPA2004 provided a forum for scientists and engineers in academia and ind- try to exchange and discuss their experiences, new ideas, research results, and applications about all aspects of parallel and distributed computing. There was a very large number of paper submissions (361) from 26 countries and regions, including not only Asia and the Paci?c, but also Europe and North America. All submissions were reviewed by at least three program or technical committee members or external reviewers. It was extremely di?cult to select the presentations for the conference because there were so many excellent and interesting submissions. In order to allocate as many papers as possible and keep the high quality of the conference, we ?nally decided to accept 78 regular papers and 38 short papers for oral technical presentations. We believe that all of these papers and topics not only provide novel ideas, new results, work in progress and state-of-the-art techniques in this ?eld, but also stimulate the future research activities in the area of parallel and distributed computing with applications."

This volume contains the papers presented at the 5th International Workshop on Advanced Parallel Processing Technologies, APPT 2003. This series of workshops is designed to strengthen the cooperation between the German and Chinese institutions active in the area of these technologies. It has continued to grow, providing an excellent forum for reporting advances in parallel processing technologies. The 5th workshop itself addressed the entire gamut of related topics, ranging from the architectural aspects of parallel computer hardware and system software to the applied technologies for novel applications. For this workshop, we received over 191 full submissions from researchers all over the world. All the papers were peer-reviewed in depth and qualitatively graded on their relevance, originality, signi?cance, presentation, and the overall appropriateness for their acceptance. Any concerns raised were discussed in the program committee. The organizing committee did an excellent job in selecting 78 papers (Among them, 21 were short ones) for presentation. In short, the papers included here represent the forefront of research from China, Germany, and the other countries.
